Dear Parents,
This week has been another fabulous week, made even more stellar by the visit from Patricia Lobaccaro, the president of the Brazil Foundation and Antonio's mother, for coming in with two amazing people from Brazil.
Patricia's visit supported our Service Learning Unit, and also tied in with what we have been learning about the use of the media. Here is some brief information about our wonderful visitors: Rene has been named by The Guardian as one of the 6 most influential teenagers in the world, he has won the “shorty award”, the Oscar of Twitter, he came to the US to give a talk at Harvard and participate in a UNICEF event in Boston. He was chosen to be the Olympic torch carrier for Brazil.
Paulo Nunes has created the most important afro- descendant web portal in Brazil, with over 2 million visitors, and is a important voice in independent media in Brazil.
If you missed it, our newest piece in the Huffington Post has made a fun splash, pun intended! Check it our here. Stop by and leave a comment; the kids are very excited to see that they have a following.
In Math, we began to design our Geo cities, representing 3D shapes with 2D planes, measuring to fit a given area, and collaborating as a team to design a cohesive idea. I am a firm believer in the hands on, DOING component of learning, and this activity seems to be a perfect way to deepen the understanding of Euclidian Geometry. We are also learning that, throughout the world, there are different names for shapes as well as different Mathematical understandings.
In Literacy, we continue to read in literature circles to develop our reading skills and strategies. We are focusing on finding connections in our reading. In writing, we are developing our ability to vary sentence structure to include more complex sentences.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the International Food Fair. I hear this is one of the greatest traditions at UNIS, which means it myst be really, really great because I have already experienced so much greatness!
Have a great weekend,
Ms. Erin M Threlfall
